A windshield may incur pits. A pit is small scoop out of your front windshield. It does not go into the plastic layer in between the two pieces of glass.  A pit cannot be repaired because there is no way for the repair resin to stick to to the windshield and is considered wear and tear. This is not covered by insurance.  A chip will usually have some starring which provides area for the resin to adhere to.

Doing an auto glass chip or window crack repair you keep the manufacturer's glass and do not have to fight with the insurance company on getting OEM glass versus aftermarket glass, which is usually cheaper and possibly inferior to OEM glass.

You also get to keep the original factory window seal, maintaining the integrity of the windshield. Some additional benefits to a repair are that it prevents further cracks and it only takes about thirty minutes.

With a faulty repair, you could experience shrinkage, the area turning yellow, or the windshield cracking.  All resins are not alike, but more importantly, the tools and techniques used to apply the resin can make a huge difference in the quality of the repair. Additionally, a bad repair, a chip or crack can expand unexpectedly with quick temperature changes (such as with the AC or heater), and rough road conditions.
