By: United Premier Soccer League Based in San Francisco (Calif.), AFC San Francisco Hearts will begin UPSL play in the Northwest Conference and host its home games at 5,000-seat Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State University (1600 Halloway Ave., San Francisco, CA 94132) in compliance with UPSL's Minimum Standards. United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "The interest in soccer in the Bay Area is exploding right now and we're excited to welcome AFC San Francisco Hearts to the United Premier Soccer League. Founder Maurice Johnson has a vision for his club in the heart of San Francisco, and we're a big believer in both. We think this club has a big future with the right people leading the way. We wish Maurice Johnson and AFC Hearts of San Francisco luck as they prepare to kick off in Spring 2018." Founded by Maurice Johnson, a venture capitalist and entrepreneur in the banking technology industry, AFC San Francisco Hearts is the culmination of a lifetime love affair with soccer. AFC San Francisco Hearts President Maurice Johnson said, "I just got back from the United Kingdom, and I was flying into London and the first thing you see is soccer pitches. Driving around the countryside you could see that every little community has a soccer pitch, and a big reason why is promotion and relegation. Those communities know that someday they can move up, and that motivated me to join the effort to establish Promotion/Relegation in the United. States. You can see really exciting things happening in those communities, and I want to bring that here where there are a lot of players and a lot of pride on the peninsula and in the City here." A native of Southern California with a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies from Western Illinois University, Johnson, 52, is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc., and will serve as the club's first President. Bradley Burke, 39, a former youth player before going on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business Economics from UC Santa Barbara, will serve as the team's General Manager. "Bradley brings more than 17 years of experience in business development, venture capital, banking and wealth management to our club," Johnson said. Supporters can download the AFC San Francisco Hearts app from the Apple and Google Store. The team will host a tryout at Boxer Stadium (166 Havelock St., San Francisco, CA 94112) on Dec. 9, and soon will announce its upcoming game schedule.
