Steelhead Composites Presents White Paper on Lightweight Hydraulics at 10th JFPS Symposium
Steelhead Composites was invited to the 10th JFPS symposium on Fluid Power to present their white paper titled "Enabling Hydraulics for Robotics and Prosthetics with Lightweight Composites Diaphragm Accumulators".
"We are excited to have the opportunity to present our offering to the country famous for their robotic innovation" said Andrew Coors, CEO of Steelhead Composites, who was the presenter. "Steelhead's novel approach to pressure vessel design, materials and manufacturing allows solutions that are currently not available in hydraulics. Now we take these products to the exciting field of robots."
Steelhead Small Diaphragm Accumulators
Steelhead was approached by a US-based innovator in robotics in early 2016 with a specific requirement for a lightweight 450mL diaphragm accumulator;
The paper covers Steelhead Composites' technical efforts to develop a lightweight composite diaphragm accumulator from the ground up. The efforts include application of composite pressure vessel design concepts, structural optimization for mass reduction, pressure sealing and robustness, design for cost-effective manufacturability, product testing and design validation. It is authored by Kaushik Mallick, PhD, Mike Stewart and Andrew Coors and can be found on Steelhead's website.
"Steelhead has taken hydraulic accumulators for fluid power applications back to the drawing board," said Kaushik Mallick, Director of Engineering. "Hydraulics is an old, mature field; one which sees little innovation. But there are markets such as prosthetics and robotics which need the power density of hydraulics but are deterred by the substantial weight of steel, so we designed our composite accumulators with those applications in mind."
Steelhead Composites offers diaphragm accumulators between 450ml and 2L weighing approximately 1/4th to 1/5th of traditional accumulators at competitive prices.
Upon returning to the United States, CEO Andrew Coors was greeted with an email from a Japanese attendee of his presentation. Subject line: "We need your accumulators!"
