By: United Premier Soccer League
Based in Napa, Calif., Napa Sporting SC will begin UPSL play in the Northwest Conference.
United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "We welcome Napa Sporting SC to the UPSL as a new member. This is a team that's been in its community for nearly 40 years, with an important history that dates back to local immigrants cultivating a pitch on a 1-acre plot, and local ownership that's committed to honoring those traditions. We wish Napa Sporting SC the best of success as it prepares for its UPSL debut in 2018."
The club is owned by Fernando Lopez, Monica Macias, Bernie Ochoa and Debbie Weston, and is an extension of Napa Sport Academy, of which Ochoa is the Director of Coaching.
Napa Sporting Soccer Club Co-Owner and Head Coach Bernie Ochoa, "We are thankful to be a part of the UPSL. The idea behind us taking the next step was to bridge the gap between youth soccer and professional. It's a team by the community for the community and it gives our local talented players the opportunity to compete at a higher level and represent Napa Valley! We believe UPSL will help us enhance our overall program with continues growth of player and club development. We hope to continue the rich tradition of Napa Sporting SC!"
Napa Sporting SC first started in 1979 by vineyard workers who came to the United States looking for a better future. It has continued by its own success and growth as second and third-generation players and coaches from those same families continue to tradition in Napa Valley.
The team has played in numerous men's amateur leagues in Northern California, and currently has a team competing in NorCal Liga. It will retain a local-based team while competing in the UPSL beginning next year.
Napa Sporting Soccer Co-Owner and General Manager Debbie Weston said, "With the progression of talent in the Napa Sport Academy program, the growth alone in the older age groups sparked Bernie's interest in moving forward. It was a matter of putting those pieces together and we've worked really hard to do that."
Napa Sporting SC will play its home games at Dodd Stadium at Justin-Siena High School (4026 Maher St., Napa, CA 92558) in compliance with UPSL's Minimum Standards. The team soon will announce its upcoming game schedule.
