LEWISTON, Maine - Oct. 18, 2017 - PRLog -- Fales & Fales, P.A., a Maine law firm that represents victims of personal injuries, has announced the winner of its annual Family Law Enforcement Scholarship, a fund for undergraduate and graduate students with family ties to law enforcement.

2017's winner is Shawna Garcia, an undergraduate student at New Mexico State University who is currently studying for a career as a certified public accountant. Growing up with a father in law enforcement gave her a strong foundation that drives her success to this day -- she shares, "My dad's line of work meant that I wasn't sheltered from the problems in the world...I was empowered. From an early age, I was taught to speak up, take action, and to always follow my instincts."

Garcia says that receiving this scholarship will allow her to focus on her education, not her tuition, "I am honored to have been selected. With this scholarship, I can stop worrying and just focus on acing my CPA exam. My family and I can't thank Fales & Fales enough for giving back to families like us -- and in such a meaningful way."

For attorneys Jennifer Ferguson and Anthony Ferguson, of Fales & Fales, P.A., giving back makes sense. Anthony grew up in a law enforcement family: his father, Arthur Ferguson, served with the Lewiston, Maine Police Department until he passed away during Anthony's senior year. The Law Enforcement Family Member Scholarship was established to honor Arthur's service.

As personal injury attorneys and active members of the Lewiston community, Jennifer and Tony continue to see, first-hand, just how transformative the work performed by members of law enforcement really is.  The scholarship, meant to alleviate the financial burden of higher education for families who have already given so much, accepts applications each year. Any student with family members, active or retired, in law enforcement is invited to apply. To be considered, candidates must maintain a 3.0 GPA and submit a short essay describing how coming from a law enforcement family has impacted them.
