Supporting the next generation of doctors

ST NEOTS, U.K. - Oct. 18, 2017 - PRLog -- FUJIFILM SonoSite continues to maintain its strong focus on supporting medical training and education, and recently supplied instruments for a series of ultrasound workshops at the Doctors Academy International Medical Summer School. On the 31st of July 2017, over 160 medical students from across Europe and the Middle East congregated in Manchester for the summer school, a five-day programme of workshops, lectures and social events. In addition, Doctors Academy hosted an Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (e-FAST) course in association with the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery on Saturday the 5th of August 2017.

Doctors Academy was established in 2005, and is now one of the world's largest providers of independent medical education, complementing the programmes already offered by medical universities, institutions and hospitals. Ultrasound workshops prove extremely popular among delegates, since the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in this area is necessary to fully understand the basics of the technique. Professor Stuart Enoch, a surgeon by training and now the CEO of Doctors Academy, explained: "We focus on responding to the academic needs of medical students and junior doctors by delivering specialised knowledge advancement and skills courses that are not available via traditional routes. The summer school encompasses a series of workshops and lectures that provide a comprehensive understanding of a variety of essential medical and surgical skills."

"Ultrasound is traditionally the remit of radiologists, and medical students and junior doctors are seldom given the chance to perform and interpret ultrasound scans during their education or training. The workshop covers the fundamental principles of ultrasound, including the interpretation of core organs and choosing the most appropriate probes to use in different situations. Our tutors focus on a series of real-life scenarios, and discuss whether MRI, CT or ultrasound is the most appropriate investigative technique. This is followed by a demonstration and a practical session, enabling delegates to perform ultrasound scans for themselves, which explains the popularity of the workshop."

"The feedback from this year's attendees was excellent – they always love the ultrasound workshops, and this time was no exception. They were grateful to gain hands-on experience, and enjoyed the chance to grasp the fundamentals of ultrasound scanning and to understand how the instruments work. We were pleased to be able to use the SonoSite point-of-care ultrasound systems this year – as recommended by our tutors – and welcome the opportunity to use them again in the future."
