Washington, D.C.—Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) welcomed Senator Elizabeth Warren to a conference call late last week, after sending out notices that the group considered her a strong candidate for president. During the call, the Senator thanked PDA for its effective organizing and for endorsing her early in her 2012 effort. PDA's spokespeople praised the Senator, and discussed plans to endorse her for her reelection in 2018.
In an mass email sent before the call, Mike Hersh, PDA Communications Director wrote, "Progressive Democrats of America is committed to the struggle for economic and social justice, high quality healthcare for all, and elections that represent all the people—not just the powerful special interests. That's why we recognize Sen. Elizabeth Warren's leadership, as well as her ongoing hard work and dedication to progress on these and a wide range of critical issues." Today he added, "Sen. Warren has been an exemplary Senator. We believe she would make an exemplary president."
Sen. Warren thanked the group saying, "PDA is a terrific organization, and I was very grateful when PDA endorsed me early back in 2012 when I was first in this race." She noted that "Tim Carpenter [PDA's late founder] was one of my earliest supporters."
Sen. Warren praised PDA for "really making a difference" and credited the group saying, "I love PDA because you organize for a progressive agenda. You organize for economic justice. You organize for social justice [and] stopping global warming."
She added, "You helped us beat back the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and helped us as a nation move forward and say now loud and strong across this country, 'Healthcare is a basic human right.'"
The Senator made clear her belief that when a CEO breaks the law, "we should send them to jail." She pledged, "we're going to get Medicare for All. That means we're going to make the kind of changes we need to make in this country so that everyone gets access to healthcare, and nobody goes broke.... I think this about our values, it's about what we're willing to get out there and fight for."
Donna Smith, PDA Executive Director, called Sen. Warren "the most magnificent Progressive in the country."
Russell Freedman, PDA's Massachusetts Coordinator, introduced Sen. Warren saying when he first met her at a planned outside rally in Pittsfield, MA as she was considering a run for Senate. He recalled that "the rain came down so hard it was going sideways, [but] Sen. Warren persisted."
Freedman added, she has "the unique ability to connect with people across the Commonwealth"
Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots political action committee. The organization was founded in 2004 to transform the Democratic Party and U.S. politics by working inside the Democratic Party and outside with peace, justice, civil rights, environmental, and other reform movements. PDA's Healthcare Not Warfare campaign brings together the need for a comprehensive universal healthcare system with our advocacy for scaled-down military spending and reliance on non-military approaches to foreign policy, rather than regime change and military action.
The PDA National Advisory Board includes: Representatives John Conyers, Jr., Barbara Lee, Keith Ellison, Raul Grijalva, and James McGovern; as well as progressive leaders including Academy Award winning documentarian Michael Moore, Actress / Activist Mimi Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Rodney Sadler, Author Jim Hightower, and Radio Hosts / Authors Lila Garrett and Thom Hartmann. Esteemed activists Michael Lighty, Medea Benjamin, Steve Cobble, Kristin Cabral, Marjorie Cohn, and Dr. Paul Song, M.D. also serve on the PDA Advisory Board.
