SF Bay Area Author Lands Audiobook Deal in New Wattpad and Hachette Book Group Partnership
YA fantasy Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them by West Marin County Writer Debra Goelz is Now Available for Pre-Order
Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them began as a serialized novel on Wattpad, an online platform for writers to develop and post entertaining stories for millions of readers around the world. The story quickly went viral and currently has over 9 million reads. It won a 2014 HQ Love Watty award from the team at Wattpad headquarters as one of their favorite books of the year.
Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them tells the story of 16-year-old mermaid, Waverly Fishwater, who ends up in hot water when she sticks her fins where she shouldn't and decides to investigate a string of mermaid abductions. To keep her out of trouble, her parents send her to boarding school on the California coast, where her classmates include not only werewolves, fairies, and minor Greek gods, but also mermaid-blood loving vampires. If fitting in wasn't hard enough, whoever is behind the abductions might also be polluting the bay. As she gets closer to solving the mystery, she must enlist the help of both friends and frenemies to stay afloat, before she becomes the next target for the nefarious mernapper.
"I am thrilled to have Mermaids take new form as an audiobook," says Goelz, who has lived in West Marin for over twenty years. "This story is a passion project that combines my love for mermaids and our beautiful bay—and the need for conservation if we are going to preserve it."
Debra Goelz is a refugee from Hollywood where she served as a financial executive for companies like Universal Pictures and Jim Henson Productions. Her performing career began and ended with her puppeteering a chicken in Muppet Treasure Island. After garnering over 9 million on-line reads, her YA fantasy Mermaids and the Vampires Who Love Them was selected for publication by Hachette Audio. She lives with her husband in a magical redwood forest in West Marin.
