IAABC Offers Free Behavior Help for Pets in Foster Care After Hurricanes

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Sept. 27, 2017 - PRLog -- The devastation caused by the recent hurricanes over Texas, Florida, Puerto Rica and the Caribbean has resulted in a large number of newly homeless animals being rescued and moved all around the country. Many of these animals are just now finding themselves in foster care, and rescue organizations are in great need of help with the behavioral challenges some of these animals have.

That's why Maddie's Fund—a leading organization promoting community lifesaving, shelter medicine education, and pet adoptions across the U.S—recently requested that IAABC members donate behavioral help to animals being fostered around the country due to the hurricanes.

IAABC's Executive Director, Marjie Alonso, immediately put out a call to all the organization's members, asking those who were able to donate their time and expertise to helping foster families meet the behavioral needs of their new dogs, cats, birds, or any other species of companion animal.

The IAABC certifies animal behavior consultants—professionals who analyze behavior problems, identify what might be causing and maintaining the problem, and suggest effective, humane, evidence-based strategies and techniques to manage and improve the animal's behavior. In a recent blog (http://chewonthis.maddiesfund.org/2017/09/free-behavior-s...), Maddie's Fund Research Director Dr. Sheila D'Arpino explained why hurricane fosters might be in need of specialist behavior services, saying, "These pets are often dealing with stress from separation from their family and everything they know, and sometimes post-traumatic stress due to the trauma of the floods. Sometimes it's difficult to know what is best to help a pet adjust—and that's why the IAABC can help."

So far over one hundred IAABC members have volunteered their time, and their skills and availability will be matched with those foster families in greatest need.

If you are fostering an animal made homeless after a recent hurricane, or you represent a foster-based rescue organization working with these animals, you can request free behavioral help from an IAABC volunteer by filling out this online form. (https://iaabccontent.org/hurricane-harvey/)
