PERTH, Australia - Sept. 20, 2017 - PRLog -- Convicted child sex offender, Ivan Tharren Butterfield, 53, was found guilty of all seven charges brought against him for a fourth child sex crime. The Perth District Court heard testimony from the victim, 43, and officers of the Police Force. This trial follows three prior convictions; 1989 and 2014. On September 19, Butterfield was convicted of committing deprivation of liberties, carnal knowledge, acts against nature, and indecent dealings and rape of a child; a 9-year-old boy in Broome, Australia in August 1983. He is remanded until sentencing on November 24, 2017.

Butterfield sat unashamed and without remorse as the jury heard evidence of how the boy's parents had recently separated and he was left alone in the care of his siblings, also minors. He went to play with a school friend next door and Butterfield answered. He was invited inside to wait for the school friend to return home, then led into a room where the door was shut and locked it behind them.

The boy told how he was threatened, recalling how he was forced to remove all his clothes. He said he would "kill me". Crying and scared the boy was pushed to his knees and slapped across the face, "I felt very upset but he told me to shut up and just get on with it… I didn't want this to happen ... I was shocked." Butterfield forced the boy to perform oral sex then proceeded to do the same to the boy whilst committing digital rape. The boy was flipped over onto his stomach and sodomised. The boy screaming in pain for it to stop throughout.

He threatened the boy, "don't tell anyone or I will come to your house when you are asleep and kill you."

The next day, the boy was in his own backyard, Butterfield abducted him and carried the reluctant victim back to the same room and locked the door. He threatened him and sexually abused him again, "He said: 'Don't say anything to anyone. If you do, I'll kill you'." The victim ran from the accused's house, "showered and brushed his teeth, feeling disgusting."

In his parent's absence, the victim stayed at another friend's home. Awakening in the middle of the night in severe pain, the victim rode his bike all the way home, climbed through the dog door and took pain medication, then rode back to his friend's house and stayed there, ashamed and fearing for his safety.

The victim continued to "live in fear", "I felt threatened and I felt that if I said something that he would either harm me or my family." In 2004 the victim told his mother. In 2007, he told his partner, who encourage him to report it. In 2012 the report led to a national search to locate the accused where police found him on 4 September 2012 in Victoria with the "gargantuan" child pornography collection.

Butterfield did not deny the allegations and told the victim: "I don't remember having to force you… but I can't really remember it." Accompanied by a police officer, Butterfield was extradited to Perth, Western Australia in October 2016, where he awaited trial.

To add context, sentencing remarks from Judge Mallaly in October 2014 ordered that Butterfield is registered as a serious sex offender and placed on the 'Sex Offenders Register' (a private database accessible only to those in law enforcement). His Honor in the 2014 trial further stated, not only is Butterfield's risk of re-offending high, yet these prior offenses "increase the need for protection of the community." He also drew a direct correlation between Butterfield's sex offender convictions and his continued immersion in abhorrent child pornography over decades and the amassing of a collection of child pornography said to be "one of the more gargantuan ever discovered" and whose content and nature was "vile in the extreme":

"Plainly this sentencing process then in 1989 did not deter you from engaging in the form of child sexual abuse involved in possession of child pornography."

The confiscated collection included more than 1.2 million images and over 5000 videos of children, between preschooler age to pre-pubescent teens, mostly males under age 12. These reported to repulsively include child rape, abduction, exploitation, depravity, heinous acts and assorted other images and videos, collected habitually and intently over more than 20 years. Judge Mallaly in the County Court of Victoria clarified "all the material was plainly criminal" and he called it "soul destroying" and an "international crime [which] demeans us all".

"Your crime of possessing child pornography fuels and encourages this criminal industry."

Butterfield left school in year 8 and became a school janitor. Despite claims of "brain injury" relating to a car accident as a child, mentioned in previous trials, was found to be of normal cognitive capacity following medical testing in 2014. The effort and fortitude to undertake what is required to amass a collection such as that found in his possession would have required an aptitude of reasonable intellect to navigate, network with online chat groups and forums, source and gain access to content difficult to obtain on the internet. Judge Mallaly in 2014 stated that this habitual, long-term, behavior denotes a "dark side", a character and conduct that "is wholly depraved" and which "fuels and encourages this criminal industry."

Despite there not being any records of other priors it is not to be ruled out that other victims may exist. Judge Mallaly said Butterfield's 1989 conviction was no deterrent as the child sex abuse continued, albeit in the form of a child pornography collection, and his risk of reoffending was high. These prior offenses "increase the need for protection of the community."
