BATON ROUGE, La. - Sept. 18, 2017 - PRLog -- Lee Magnet High School has been selected as the recipient of the Healthy Communities Grant by Keep Louisiana Beautiful. LMHS, a public high school located in EBRP, was rebuilt into a modernized, energy efficient campus and was reopened for the 2016-2017 school year. The new campus has many features designed to save energy, such as motion-activated lights that turn off after ten minutes of no movement, motion activated sinks, and hand blow dryers. Additionally, all students are issued laptops to reduce the amount of paper waste produced by the school. While the school focuses on energy efficiency and waste reduction, the school lacks a recycling program to push their mission forward.

The grant given, in the amount of $5,000, will support Lee's Recycling Initiative, a project intended to provide many recycling bins around campus while also establishing educational programs from not only the students and staff but for others around the community. Even though the school has implemented programs to reduce paper waste, there is still a substantial amount of paper and plastics found in trash cans around campus.

To combat this, several individual classrooms have implemented recycling cans, but those teachers take on the responsibility of bringing the material home for proper disposal. Those teachers have informed the school throughout the year, that their students have taken the role of recycling upon themselves – disposing of paper and plastics in the makeshift recycle bins. Similarly, several teachers have equipped their offices with recycle bins that they alternate taking home for disposal. Given the proper receptacles and information on what can be recycled, it is believed that the entire student body and staff would take ownership of the program completely.

Additionally, other projects will be conducted around the school in order to promote the recycling initiative to the students and others around the community. Lee's Recycling Initiative will positively affect the coming generations of students at Lee in addition to the current student body by encouraging them to recycle and be mindful of their waste.
