2017 State Laws Update for Small Businesses from Corporate Business Solutions

This year has seen several significant amendments to state laws that affect small businesses.

CHICAGO - Aug. 25, 2017 - PRLog -- Some states have even passed new laws that will have an impact on domestic businesses. Corporate Business Solutions, the veteran business management consultancy firm, is updating all businesses on what has changed in the year so far.

22 States Increase Minimum Wage

Small businesses in the service sector will particularly be affected by new laws increasing minimum wage across 22 states. Some states, including Maryland, Vermont, and Hawaii, have taken steps to enact new labor standards, which businesses will have to watch out for. States like Colorado, Arizona, and Maine have only passed ballot measures to increase the minimum wage, and will most likely do so in the coming months. It should be noted that rates for minimum wage still vary greatly between states. Small businesses should expect that certain states like New York and California may increase the minimum wage for up to $15 per hour possibly in the future.

Illinois Passes New Public Safety Law

Illinois has enacted a new law for all businesses in the beauty industry. Companies now should provide training to cosmetologists regarding identifying signs of domestic abuse or sexual abuse in order to better assist victims who might stumble into their ventures. This training must be provided for beauty companies to renew licenses in the state. CBS Corporate Business Solutions (http://www.cbs-cbs.com) offers company reviews for small businesses to ensure compliance with state regulatory laws.

California Bans Holding Electronics While Travelling

A new transportation law will take effect this year in California that bans motorists from holding any electronic device while they are driving. All electronic devices, such as phones and tablets, now must be mounted on the dashboard. This will affect small businesses that offer ride hailing or taxi services.

Iowa Passes New Ride Hailing Regulations

The Iowa law now requires ride hailing companies like Lyft and Uber to conduct background and insurance checks on all drivers being hired. The companies are also required to terminate any drivers who are caught abusing substances while on the job.

Change to Gun Laws in Two States

Small businesses that sell weapons should be aware that Missouri recently passed a law to eliminate permits for concealed carry. California also passed a new gun law where owners must return all magazines that can hold ten rounds or more of ammunition. Gun owners in the state who want to purchase ammunition must now undergo a background check.

More States Allow Recreational Marijuana Use

Nevada, Maine, Florida, Arkansas, Montana, Massachusetts, and California famously decriminalized recreational marijuana use the end of last year. Those laws kick off early this year. It will be legal for small businesses to engage in marijuana-related services without criminal repercussions.
