HARRODSBURG, Ky. - Aug. 18, 2017 - PRLog -- A new cornstalk paintball challenge and lots of spooky Halloween activities round out the events lineup in Harrodsburg for a very busy fall season: History Underfoot, Haunted Frontier and Field of Horror join festivals and other fun, including Oktoberfest, Kentucky Artisans Expo, a Hard Cider Bash, the Woodsongs Gathering and more, when the leaves start turning in Kentucky's oldest city. Plan your autumn adventures at Calendar of Events (http://harrodsburgky.com/wtd_calendar.html).

They're coming to get you

Devine's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch rips off the gloves with this year's new Cornstalk Paintball Wars. Battle it out on a brand new 2-acre paintball field, matching wits against friends and strangers alike. Other activities at Devine's include choosing pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, zip lining and navigating your way through the giant maze. This year's theme celebrates Devine's 10th anniversary. The fun takes place every weekend Sept. 15-Oct. 28.

On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, Devine's kicks your nightmares into high gear with its Field of Horror. Children of the Corn, Jason, Freddy, Pin Head. They and other horror movie monsters (remember the Jigsaw Killer from "Saw"?) will be waiting for you around every bend of the giant corn maze as the black of night sets in and the wind whispers menacingly through the cornstalks.

Speaking of BOO!

Go ahead: Walk over someone's grave at historic Spring Hill Cemetery during Harrodsburg's History Underfoot Cemetery Tours, 6-8 p.m. Sept. 22 and 1-3 p.m. Sept. 23. Sponsored by the James Harrod Trust, the tours offers visitors a chance to meet a number of historical figures, now residing six feet under. Bringing these colorful characters to life will be historians dressed in period costume to portray some of the earliest citizens to cross into what became the state of Kentucky.

Pull on your costume and head down the Village road for Trick-or-Treating at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill on Oct. 27 and 28. Be ready for a spooky-fun time as you gather treats and possibly a trick or two along the way. Take a hayride and Spirit Stroll and then warm up around the bonfires. Enjoy live music, food and drink, kids' crafts and a selfie costume contest.

Are you brave enough to enter the East Gate and into the smoky darkness at Old Fort Harrod State Park for its annual Haunted Frontier weekend? Not recommended for children under 10 or the weak-hearted, this seriously frightful haunt takes place Oct. 27, 28 and 29, starting in the old fort before entering the wooded area behind it – right by the oldest cemetery in Kentucky.

Artists and musicians

Rock out on the front porch Sept. 13 and 14 when the WoodSongs Front Porch Gathering, a music festival presented by The WoodSongs Front Porch Association (WFPA (http://www.woodsongs.com/)) returns to Shaker Village. An international assemblage of songwriters, banjo players, writers, poets, families and fans who love organic, simple music, WoodSongs provides an open showcase stage for WFPA member artists to share their talents, along with jamming, concerts, lectures and films. The festival is included in admission to Shaker Village and is free to WFPA members.

The free-admission Fort Harrod Jazz & Arts Festival takes place Sept. 15-17 at Old Fort Harrod State Park. See museum-quality artwork, hear outstanding jazz music and enjoy a variety of food vendors in the rustic beauty of a frontier fort. Bring a lawn chair.

On Sept. 16, the fort hosts the Kentucky Artisans Expo, a gathering of local and statewide artists – master woodworkers, knife makers, painters, photographers, illustrators, jewelry makers and many more – who will exhibit their exceptional work.

Noch ein bier? Ja, bitte! ('Another beer? Yes, please!')

Grab your lederhosen or dirndl and follow the beat of the oom-pah into Harrodsburg's Downtown Historic District. Oktoberfest returns Oct. 13-15, bringing with it booths selling bier, wurst and more in an atmosphere of gemütlichkeit (peace, comfort and acceptance). Raise a stein to this celebration of German beer, music and food that is presented by Harrodsburg First and the Arts Council of Mercer County. National and regional juried artists will join in on the fun, displaying, discussing and selling their work.

Other fall fun in Harrodsburg: Cruise on Main, Sept. 2; Bike Night, Sept. 9; Hard Cider Bash featuring a taste of the orchard on Sept. 9 and the family-fun HarvestFest, Sept. 23-24, both at Shaker Village; musical fun at the Burgin Barn with karaoke every Thursday night and headliners Larry Sanders & Borderline, plus a special guest, every Friday evening.
