"This makes me very proud," he said. "Being made partner validates all of the hard work I have put in on my cases these last eight years."
Ritsema said the reason he came to work for Bisnar Chase was to get an opportunity to represent catastrophically injured people against large corporations. Before starting at Bisnar Chase, Ritsema was on the verge of being named a partner at a personal injury defense law firm.
In retrospect, Ritsema says he has made the right decision.
"I went from representing the bad guys to fighting for the good guys," he said. "I was no longer defending wrongdoers. Instead, I've been helping those who desperately need my services and skills to get through the rest of their lives. Often, I'm the only hope they have. That's a lot of pressure, but it's also extremely rewarding."
Ritsema said he is currently working on several injury cases including auto defect cases involving Ford Explorer police SUVs that leak carbon monoxide and make their occupants sick. Bisnar Chase is representing a Newport Beach police officer who crashed his SUV into a tree after falling ill from the carbon monoxide poisoning and losing consciousness behind the wheel.
"In addition to the Newport Beach case, we are getting ready to file additional actions involving Ford Explorers and carbon monoxide poisoning across the nation," Ritsema said.
Brian Chase, senior partner at Bisnar Chase, calls Ritsema "his rock."
"Scott is someone I've been able to consistently rely on to not just do the job, but to hit it out of the park, which is what he does every time," Chase said. "His success rate with cases is unparalleled and the energy and passion he brings to work every day is just amazing. I'm thrilled to have him as a partner."
Ritsema has brought over 20 trials to verdict and conducted more than 50 arbitrations to conclusion. He has resolved more than 25 cases at seven figures or higher, and overall, has obtained more than $100,000,000 in judgments or settlements for Bisnar Chase clients since starting with the firm.
Ritsema belongs to a number of professional organizations including the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association, American Association for Justice and Consumer Attorneys of California. He was named a Best Lawyer in 2015 by the national publication, Best Lawyers. He has also been named a SuperLawyer every year since 2011.
He was recently named Lawyer of the Year for the State of California by a prestigious legal publication. In 2012, Ritsema was a co-recipient of the Consumer Attorney of the Year Award (along with partner Brian Chase) by the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), a professional association for attorneys who represent plaintiffs who seek to hold wrongdoers accountable.
Ritsema was born in Michigan, but grew up primarily in Newport Beach. He moved back to Michigan in his teens and graduated from Grandville High School in 1979 near the top of his class and as a two-year member of the National Honor Society. Ritsema got his bachelor's degree in psychology from UCLA in 1984 and his law degree from UC Davis in 1988 graduating in the top 10 percent of his class and receiving the prestigious Order of the Coif Award. He was admitted to the State Bar of California that same year.
