Ease the Stigma to Beat Epilepsy

NAGPUR, India - Feb. 11, 2017 - PRLog -- Epilepsy is one of the most common central nervous system disorders that affect nearly 65 million people across the globe. According to recent reports, it is the fourth most occurring neurological disorder after migraine, stroke & Alzheimer's disease. Recurrent & unprovoked seizures are the main symptoms of epilepsy. Seizure can be explained as a rapid attack of electrical activity in patient's brain. Severity of seizure may vary from mild to high. A mild seizure may remain unnoticed. However, stronger seizures can result in uncontrollable sensations & twitches. Stronger seizure may also lead to loss of consciousness in patients for a specific interval of time. Incidence of epilepsy is greater in children & elderly people. It has been estimated that 1 in every 30 people develop epilepsy during their lives. However, it can be effectively controlled with appropriate measures & healthy lifestyle.

Seizures usually affect normal activity of brain & may result in temporary confusion, loss of awareness, continuous staring, uncontrollable arms & legs movement or psychotic symptoms. Most common risk factors associated with epilepsy include improper sleep, chronic illness, high stress and high amount of caffeine or alcohol consumption. Genes also play a vital role in development of epilepsy. Blood tests, neurological examinations, X-Rays, CT scan, MRI scan & electroencephalogram tests can be helpful in diagnosing precise disorder of brain.

As reported by top health magazines, current ratio of patients with active epilepsy is between 6 & 10 per 1000 people. It has been recognized that in some low income developing nations, the ratio is much greater, between 9 and 17 per 1000 people. Approximately 2.5 million new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed every year. Increasing number of road accidents, birth-related injuries, lack of proper medical facilities & poor awareness are some of the major risk factors which have given rise to this disorder in low-income nations. Current statistics show that 70 % of the patients with epilepsy live in low & middle income nations.

International Epilepsy Day is observed on second Monday of February month every year. This year it will be launched across the globe on 13 February 2017. Epilepsy can be managed by following few important measures strictly. People should incorporate relaxation techniques for managing stress in day-to-day lives. Healthy diet can also control epilepsy to a larger extent. Patients must take ketogenic diet as it helps in controlling epilepsy symptoms. Ketogenic diet is a special high-fat & low-carbohydrate diet which the doctor usually recommends to patients for managing epilepsy. Apart from this, proper sleeping habits can also reduce the risk of seizures. A sound sleep can relax the central nervous system & prevent the occurrence of unprovoked seizures. Consumption of alcohol & several other drugs in larger amount can also disturb neurological system. It is absolutely essential for the patients to avoid or completely quit these habits. These small yet powerful steps can minimize the disorder & improve patient's quality of life.
