NABCA Releases Control States Nine-Liter Spirits Sales for December

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Feb. 3, 2017 - PRLog -- END-OF-YEAR RESULTS

During 2016 nine-liter spirits case sales in the control states grew at 2.8%, improving on 2015's 2.7% and 2014's 2.5%. Shelf Dollars grew at 5.0%, down from 2015's 5.3% and 2014's 5.1%.

2016's volumetric growth, a slight improvement over 2015's, matches the Control States' seventeen year CAGR, 2.8%. During the past three years volumetric growth has trended up at a modest rate, suggesting that 2017's growth will be comparable to that reported for recent years. 2016's dollar growth, down slightly from rates reported during the past few years, has been trending slightly downward, suggesting that 2017's growth will modestly lag rates reported during recent years.

Brandy/Cognac's 9.4% annual growth rate, compared to 2016's 8.4%, is noteworthy, as well as Tequila's 8.4% growth this year versus 7.8% last year. However, once again, Irish Whiskey outpaced all other categories with an annual growth rate of 14.7%, nearly flat with 2016's 14.6%. During 2016, Brandy/Cognac, Canadian Whiskey, Cocktails, Cordials, Domestic Whiskey, Gin, Irish Whiskey, Rum, Scotch, Tequila, and Vodka grew at 9.4%, 2.3%, 2.8%, -0.9%, 3.6%, 0.0%, 14.7%, 0.5%, -0.6%, 8.4%, and 2.6%, respectively.

The Southern Control States (Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia) and the North East Control States (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) grew volumes at 2.9% during 2016. In third place and close behind were the North Western Control States (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming) which grew volumes at 2.8%, followed by the Central Control States (Iowa, Montgomery County Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia) with reported growth of 2.7%. The four regions (Southern, North West, North East, and Central) grew Shelf Dollars at 5.6%, 4.5%, 5.6%, and 4.6%, respectively.

END-OF-DECEMBER RESULTS

During December, nine-liter spirits case sales in the control states grew at 2.9% compared to same period sales last year. Rolling-twelve month volume growth of 2.8% was flat with November's reported 2.8% growth. Iowa, Idaho, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, and Wyoming reported monthly growth rates exceeding their twelve month trends.

Control state spirits shelf dollars were up 4.5% during December while trending at 5.0% during the past twelve months. Iowa, Idaho, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, and Wyoming reported growth rates exceeding their twelve month trends.

For the first time in their history, the Control States reported more than $1 billion in Shelf Dollars during the month of December, 2016.

Price/Mix for December is 1.6%, down from November's 2.3%.

Irish Whiskey, with 1% share of the control states spirits market, was December's fastest growing category with 14.2% reported and a twelve month trend of 14.7%. Vodka, with 35% share, grew during the same periods at 1.0% and 2.6%. Cocktails (3.6%), Cordials (0.8%), Domestic Whiskey (6.1%), Rum (1.5%), and Scotch (0.6%) grew at rates exceeding their twelve month trends. Brandy/Cognac (6.6), Canadian Whiskey (4.4%), Gin (-1.5%), Irish Whiskey (14.2%), Tequila (7.5%), and Vodka (1.0%) did not.

November's nine-liter wine case sales growth rate was 3.2%. Pennsylvania (reporting 5.5% nine-liter case growth for wines), New Hampshire (0.1%), Utah (5.2%), Mississippi (-2.7%), Montgomery County Maryland (-3.6%), and Wyoming (-1.8%) are the control states that are the sole wholesalers of wines and spirits within their geographical boundaries. Rolling-twelve month wine volume growth in these six control states was 2.1%, nearly flat with November's reported growth of 2.2%.
