By: IntegraCare Sam, 67, and Nancy, 58, were wed on December 17 at Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone, a senior living community where Betty Brisbin, 92, is a long-time resident and Sam is a well-known volunteer. "Betty is not able to go out of the community to witness them tying the knot, so Sam decided to bring the wedding to her," said Emily Boone, Director of Sales and Marketing at Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone. Boone said this was the first wedding ceremony performed at the senior community located at 5546 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Tyrone. A total of 41 people attended, including family, friends, residents and staff at Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone. AseraCare Hospice of Altoona also was part of the event. "Mary Emery, Pastor from AseraCare, conducted the ceremony. AseraCare also provided the cookie trays," Boone said. "Our residents baked the wedding cake and cupcakes for the event." Betty Brisbin has resided at Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone for four years. Sam volunteers as a dietary aide and during community events. He even received "Spotlight Volunteer" recognition this year during National Volunteer Month in April. "Our team really values and cares about Sam," said Lisa Cowan, Executive Director of Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone. "He's a member of our Courtyard family. Our Activities Coordinator, Debra Webb, and many other team members worked to make the occasion special. Debra and our residents made the cake for the reception. The ceremony was a moving and memorable event for all of us." Sam is from Tyrone, and Nancy is from Bellwood. Betty has three living children. "Hosting this wedding meant a lot to our community," Webb said. "It was our first event of this kind, which was exciting in itself. It made the event that much more special that Sam has been a volunteer at Colonial Courtyard at Tyrone for over a year, and Betty has been a resident since 2012." "We feel it says a lot about our community that our families would want to have such a special event at our community and allow us to be a part of it," she continued.
