Subaru of Indiana Automotive Celebrates 5 Millionth Vehicle
"For nearly thirty years, our Associates have been building outstanding vehicles for the North American market and over 50 other countries," said Tom Easterday, SIA Senior Executive Vice President. "From the Subaru Legacy built here on September 11, 1989 to our five millionth vehicle today, our Associates have remained committed to building exceptional quality and safety into every vehicle built at SIA."
In addition to the Subaru Impreza, Legacy and Outback models currently produced at SIA, the plant also made the Subaru Baja and Tribeca in the past. SIA will add Subaru's new 3-row crossover vehicle to its production line-up in 2018. Over the past four years, SIA has invested $1.3 billion and added more than 2,000 new jobs to increase its production volume and prepare for Impreza production. Since 2008, sales of the Subaru Legacy have nearly tripled and sales of the Subaru Outback have almost quadrupled in the U.S. market.
The Lafayette plant has been home to several other vehicle makes as well. Until July 2004, some Isuzu models were produced at the plant, and more than one million Isuzu vehicles are included in the five million vehicle total. The production of the Honda Passport and Toyota Camry have also gotten an assist from SIA over the years. Associates celebrated the 3 millionth Subaru built at SIA in July.
"This is an exciting time for SIA," Easterday said. "With our rapid rate of growth, recent expansions, and strong Subaru sales it's easy to see that the next million vehicles will come much faster. That's good news for all of us at SIA, for our local community, and for Indiana."
While SIA has exported Subaru vehicles to over 50 different countries, the production of 5 million vehicles has had a particularly meaningful impact on Indiana, and the local community. SIA receives parts from several suppliers located in Indiana. In addition, SIA has received several awards for its quality, safety and environmental stewardship, and engaged in significant corporate philanthropy, including funding the SIA Foundation and through "Subaru Serves," its Associate volunteer program.
