CARRBORO, N.C. - Dec. 8, 2016 - PRLog -- A wonderful site to behold happened yesterday morning 12/7/16 at the Carrboro City Town Hall where volunteers from the Carrboro Community Garden Club and employees from the Public Works department coordinated efforts to hang one huge and two medium-sized holiday wreathes.

For more than 27 years this all-volunteer group has dedicated hours, creativity and hard work to help adorn the Town Hall as well as to take on other community projects
. This group meets at local's homes – shares wisdom and advice about planting in this area and has been known for a specific passion in appreciating the use of native plants.

Proud of her groups efforts, "The Chapel Hill, Carrboro Holiday Parade is this Saturday, December 10th 10-12:00 noon which starts in Chapel Hill and ends near the Carrboro Town Hall.  We always try to get the wreaths up before the parade." remarked Marcia Mills, the Director of the Carrboro Community Garden Club

Marcia Mills, the Director of the Carrboro Community Garden Club spearheaded the event helping the others hoist the wreathes so that the entire community can see them and enjoy.  The event would not have gone off so well without the help of local Carrboro City staff members from the Department of Public Works;  Bobby Horton, Brandon Philippie and Kelly Blaire.  More than ten members created the wreathes this past Sunday, and Garden members who helped with the raising of the wreaths included Sherry Jones, Aileen Randall, Frances Shetley & daughter Catherine Dean, Susan Adler George and Sue Morgan.

As the final wreath was placed  one of the founders, Frances Shetley age 90+ remarked about how lovely they turned out. Frances founded the garden club with several of her friends around 1973.  Marcia Mills joined the group in 1975. Frances is a former Board of Alderman member in Carrboro. She and her friends wanted to share information about nature, plants and share their knowledge and bounty with each other.

Mostly native plants used in the Wreaths used:

Native:

Eastern Red Cedar, Magnolia, White Pine cones, Native grasses including Goldenrod, switch grass,, River Oats, broom sedge.

Non-native plants include:
Variegated Holly, Cotton Bolls, Hydrangea, Juniper, Cypress among others.

"I know many volunteers spent hours in the cold and rain just a few days ago to make these beautiful wreathes all from native plants. My mom is a member of the Carrboro Community Garden Club and she encouraged me to watch the unveiling." J. LaCosta, Chapel Hill NC
