Recall Effort Against Las Vegas Mayor Ended

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Dec. 8, 2016 - PRLog -- The recall effort against Mayor Tonita Gurulé-Girón is over.

Ms. Gurulé-Girón made history in April when she was elected the first woman Mayor of the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico.

In October, Manuel "Manny" Martinez initiated a recall effort against Gurulé-Girón.

Gurulé-Girón had been in office less than six months, but the Las Vegas City Charter allows residents to petition for recall of officials at any time.

Martinez notified the Las Vegas City Clerk on December 7 that he had discontinued gathering signatures for the recall, and was withdrawing from the effort citing personal reasons.

Martinez's withdrawal  notice comes less than a week from the December 12 deadline for submitting the petition signatures.

"I am glad to see this concluded," said Mayor Gurulé-Girón. "The recall, and some of the misinformation supporting it, undermined the stability of the city administration and caused concern among city employees. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and it will be good to proceed without distraction. "
