PA Band Reads Pearl Harbor Comic Book Before Honolulu Parade

World War II Comic Book Accompanies Pennsylvania Band in Pearl Harbor Day Hawaiian Appearance
HERSHEY, Pa. - Dec. 5, 2016 - PRLog -- Sometime during the nearly 6,000 mile flight from JFK to Honolulu International Airport, 55 chosen members of the Bradford Area High School Band and their chaperones open copies of Pearl Harbor and the Day of Infamy, a 24-page comic book from World War II Comix, and familiarize themselves with the story of American tragedy and determination which they are about to commemorate. The event is the 75th anniversary commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese planes. The band will be one of 97 entries in a parade through Honolulu on December 7th. The band will also perform a concert on the battleship USS Missouri, now located in Pearl Harbor. These events culminate a month-long series of activities conceived by the 75th Commemoration Committee to honor the memory of those who served and those who lost their lives during the brutal surprise attack on December 7, 1941.

The BAHS band spent months preparing for the journey, raising funds to pay for the trip with the help of local veterans' organizations, practicing music and steps and finally leaving Northern Pennsylvania for a long bus ride to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and an even longer plane ride to Hawaii. When contacted by Monroe Publications with the comic book donation, BAHS director of instrumental music Kathy Thumpston thought the idea to be "awesome" – a great way for the students to learn or learn more about the events they will be commemorating.

This short graphic history of the shocking events of December 7, 1941, details the true events of what President Franklin D. Roosevelt called "a date that will live in infamy" in his message to the U.S. Congress to ask for a declaration of war in response to Japan's surprise attack on America's principal military stronghold in the Pacific.

"We believe this novel form of presenting actual events in American history will capture the interest of new readers, particularly young people," suggests author Jay Wertz, who has written multiple books about World War II. "The impact of the sacrifices made by brave Americans at Pearl Harbor and elsewhere is too important to become lost or misunderstood. In some small way, we hope this comic will help preserve that history."

Pearl Harbor and the Day of Infamy also includes the introduction to a serialized adventure graphic novel set during the War in the Pacific entitled Separated by War. The serialization will continue in future issues of World War II Comix' accounts of other World War battles including Bataan and Corregidor, The Battle of Midway, Saipan and Iwo Jima.

Pearl Harbor and the Day of Infamy is available as a full-color traditional comic book, $4.95, and in digital form for iBooks, Kindle and other digital formats, $3.95 to $3.99. It can be ordered through the WorldWarIIComix.com website, iTunes, Amazon and select retailers. The Pearl Harbor Day parade will begin at 6 PM Honolulu time on December 7 and will be streamed live at www.pearlharborparade.org.
