Better Care Chiropractic Uses Interferential Electric Stimulation for Pain Relief

The use of electric currents as a pain-management technique is long-established in physical therapy. Interferential electric application is a newer technology which improves upon older methods of electrical delivery, which were sometimes difficult for patients to undergo. At Better Care Chiropractic, physical therapy with an emphasis on sports medicine is regarded as a core part of the chiropractic mission, and the staff is pleased to offer this safe, effective alternative to provide relief for sprains and spasms.

Frequencies are the rate at which current alternate. At low frequencies, electricity is scientifically proven to activate the natural pain-relief mechanism in the nerves. The problem is that low-frequency currents encounter lots of resistance from other tissues before reaching the nerves, causing a counterproductive painful reaction. High-frequency current has shown promise on the spine and the spinal roots in the upper legs. But to deliver the proper frequency to the peripheral nerves, meaning those which branch off from the spinal cord, a different approach is needed.

Interferential electric machines use two medium frequencies which cross paths with each other, thus simulating a low-current input. Depending on the device, the current crossing might take place within the machine or the body (and Dr. Custer can explain this in more detail), but the result is the same. The nerves receive the current as if it is low-frequency and release endorphins, but the current travels to them without the usual resistance.

Among the most common ailments treated with interferential electro-therapy are injured shoulders, arthritic knees, and post-op pain resulting from ACL and knee reconstruction. Interferential electric currents can also be used for muscle stimulation. Rarely would interferential electro-therapy be used alone, as it brings about greater improvements in patients when combined with other treatments than either treatment would separately. At Better Care Chiropractic, the physical therapy staff is trained to provide a number of treatment options, with plans particularly suited for each patient. Electro-therapy is one of many alternate forms of pain reliefs offered at Dr. Custer's practice which gets proven results.
