The Automobile Safety Foundation (founded 1988) continues campaign for the "modernization of telephone banking." ASF has filed with the CFPB the following banking and business telecommunications recommendations, "Safe Call," at: http://carsafe.org/
Over a million people were killed in automobile accidents last year, with another two million seriously injured. The NHTSA states distracted driving is the number one cause of auto accidents and a "deadly epidemic." ASF recommends a cure for this epidemic, the science of road concentration … Eyes on the Road/Hands on the Wheel.
There are six billion mobile phone users, and over a billion vehicles on the road. Mobile phone use while driving is a worldwide constant. The magnitude of this matter dictates an urgent need for immediate remedial actions to address new banking and business communications standards and practices.
Banks are the most called businesses in the world, and also the business with the dangerous telephone demand, "Enter or say your ATM, account, or credit card number." This outdated identification propriety is extremely hazardous to those on the road as it encourages people to text message and/or read ATM, credit card or account information while driving. Furthermore, this telephone banking identification practice is proven insecure with the realization that ATM, credit cards, and account numbers are not effective for telephone banking security as they can be lost, stolen, or even copied. There are modern and better security measures now available such as secret passwords and voice biometrics. With main line voice command systems now in use by several banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citi Bank, and Capital One, an acknowledgment of the importance of the ASF Safe Call recommendations and the start of a new industry standard, the recognition that card or account number identification requests are insecure and potentially hazardous is beginning. Safe Call improvements are also suited for all bank divisions including credit card, mortgage, brokerage, and loan departments. The ASF Safe Call recommendations improve banking and business telecom security, safety, proficiency, and productivity (customer satisfaction)
