NATICK, Mass. - Nov. 28, 2016 - PRLog -- Among the hustle and bustle of the holidays many people have just pushed through the biggest shopping weekend of the year: Black Friday. Last year, a reported 133.7 million people went shopping over the holiday weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

"Black Friday has turned into a multi-day event for shoppers during the Thanksgiving holiday," said Dr. Cheryl Abelow, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers of MetroWest in Natick. "And we know the shopping continues in full gear for the next several weeks. It's important to wear appropriate shoes if you're planning to be on your feet for several hours to avoid pain during and after shopping."

Athletic or walking shoes are ideal for holiday shopping, but there are some specific questions to ask when choosing a pair:

· Does the shoe have a rubber sole that can be slightly twisted and bent in the toe area, but doesn't collapse completely? It is important to have enough support to keep the foot stable, but provide some flexibility so the foot can naturally roll from heel to toe.

· Does the inside sole have cushioning? The shock of hitting your foot on a concrete floor will be absorbed by the shoe's cushioning, rather than by your joints.

· Is there arch support, and does it match your arch type? Arches in a shoe provide added support that can prevent pain, if it fits your arch correctly.

"At FYZICAL MetroWest, we encourage our patients to always wear shoes appropriate for their activities," says Dr. Abelow. "Even if it is just walking, the correct shoe can alleviate pain in their feet and other joints, as well as prevent the development of more severe conditions such as plantar fasciitis."

An overall wellness exam, such as BodyQ by FYZICAL, can assess potential problems like poor posture, balance and other physical problems that may be caused by inadequate foot support. FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers of MetroWest welcomes anyone interested in improving his or her posture, balance and overall physical health with a BodyQ evaluation.  FYZICAL MetroWest also offers custom foot orthotics and reasonable prices, usually about 25% lower than most area podiatrists.
