In her long career as an orthodontist and an orthodontic hygienist before that, Cynthia Wong, DMS, prides herself on offering her patients the most advanced treatments. Chief among those is Invisalign, a clear plastic alternative to braces. Less painful and time-consuming than traditional orthodontics, this treatment plan is available for adults and teens.

First put on the market in 1997, Invisalign is a brand product which aligns patients' teeth through a series of disposable devices which the patient is free to insert and remove. After taking a mold of the patient's mouth, the dentist uses Invisalign's software to map out a treatment plan.  A series of arch-shaped braces will then be manufactured, with each designed to progressively shift the teeth a little more than the previous one. Each brace is meant to be worn for two weeks, and patients will check in with Dr. Wong every six weeks to makes sure they are on-course.

That Invisalign patients only need to visit the orthodontist once every six weeks instead of monthly is one of many advantages Invisalign has over older braces. The check-up does not require painful tightenings or present more opportunities for medical errors. Invisalign also doesn't require hooked brackets to be placed on the molars, and if the brace breaks, it can easily be removed by the patient, reducing their risk of injury.

However, because patients can remove Invisalign while eating and playing sports, breakage should be a rare event. Children also usually had a very difficult time brushing and flossing with old-fashioned braces, but because they can remove Invisalign, they shouldn't have any additional problems. Since they're clear, patients of all ages, but especially adults, tend to find Invisalign less stigmatizing and have greater motivation to keep their teeth clean and feel confident in their smiling.

Invisalign also supplies a retainer which Dr. Wong may recommend after dental realignment is complete. There are many types of braces Dr. Wong offers, and old-fashioned ones have advanced a lot in recent years and can be offered in more cosmetically pleasing alternatives. However, for mild cases, Invisalign is clearly the best option.
