The Toys for Tots Literacy Program provides brand new books to children who would otherwise have no access to books. Studies have found that increasing access to age-appropriate books is one way to help improve literacy. It is estimated that 61% of low income homes do not have any books available for their children, which is where the Toys for Tots Literacy program steps in. The funds from tickets sales, as well as those collected for a cake walk held during the dance will be given directly to this program. Arleene Norman, the founder of Savoy South and owner of Right Step Studio, started the dances as a way to give back to the community. Earlier dances have benefitted the Pinellas Sheriff's Police Athletic League and My Hope Chest. Ms. Norman has a 20-plus year history as a dance instructor, and has been a student of dance for most of her life. Savoy South Dance Hall is a mobile dance hall, which hosts regular swing dance classes and events throughout the Tampa Bay Area. The monthly Swing Dances for Charity are held in the Fort Harrison's tenth floor Crystal Ballroom, home to one of the only oval wood dance floors in Florida. The Flag Band plays live accompaniment throughout the dance. Swing dance evolved from the early years of American Jazz in the 1920s, and covers a variety of styles. At the dance for charity on December 8th, those new to the dance form will learn East Coast Swing. The dance class begins at 7, with an open dance starting at 8pm. No partner is needed and all ages are welcome.
