Established in 2006 by Alan Thornton, Earlsmann was set up as a designer and distributor of lighting products for architectural and interior design applications. Alan – who has over 30 years' experience in the engineering and lighting industries – recognised that there was considerable demand for complete lighting solutions, incorporating sensors and controls. He quickly began to identify ideas with potential for product design and development.

An innovative approach delivers commercial success

In response to the huge rise in demand for LED lighting, and rapid evolution of the technology, Earlsmann soon began to manufacture and supply its own LED products. One of the first of these products was an escape lighting system for military vehicles. Working in collaboration with Aeroglow Limited, worldwide suppliers of crew survivability systems, Earlsmann designed and manufactured the HaLO (Hatch Lighting and Orientation) system. The success of this product enabled the company to grow and explore other product areas.

Using its in-house technical knowledge and manufacturing capability, Earlsmann is now able to rapidly develop technical solutions and products for a complete range of outdoor and indoor applications – from car parks and public areas to leisure facilities, schools, offices, warehouses and factories. The company's specialist LED lighting solutions include LightShelf illuminated shelving, and the LumaPex™ range of illuminated panels and light sheets.

Earlsmann offers its clients a 'one stop' solution for all lighting needs, manufacturing products at its factory in Tiverton, Devon, to fit each client's needs. On a recent project at a car park in Bromley, Earlsmann provided new LED lighting throughout, including illuminated signs made from LumaPex, creating a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians.

Earlsmann's products are reliable and durable. This durability is evident in projects such as at Jubilee Bridge in Westminster, London, where Earlsmann met the need for new balustrade lighting by creating a prototype tube in polycarbonate with LEDs on both sides of an aluminium heatsink. This custom-made LED lighting, installed back in 2010, is still illuminating the pedestrian footpath extremely effectively, while also making the bridge more visible from the river.

Collaboration with customers is key to great lighting design

Earlsmann works closely with its customers to understand their requirements, undertaking site visits and conducting RELUX modelling to inform product selection and placement. Its final lighting designs consider: How will spaces will be used? Are sensors required? Can any existing infrastructure be reused or adapted?
