Grant Helps Journalism Nonprofit to 'Seed' Child Welfare Stories

LOS ANGELES - Nov. 22, 2016 - PRLog -- Fostering Media Connections has received a $75,000 grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to fuel its continued production and distribution of solution-based news stories on the child welfare system in Southern California.

Fostering Media Connections reports and produces original news content, which is published online in The Chronicle of Social Change.

"Because this is such a time of ongoing crisis for children who are in dependency, the work of Fostering Media Connections is especially compelling," said Wendy Garen, president and CEO of the Parsons Foundation. "The Chronicle of Social Change is a reliable, thoughtful source of diverse viewpoints that are just so sorely needed as we go through this period of reform."

Fostering Media Connections' staff and freelancers closely cover the child welfare system in Los Angeles County, which is the largest child welfare system in the nation, as well as state-level policies that affect communities throughout California.

"There's very little investigative reporting that's going on, and very few reporters, if any, whose beat is focused on child welfare, so I look at the work of The Chronicle as almost like when you seed clouds to make it rain," Garen said. "The Chronicle is seeding important stories that end up having a much broader impact, particularly given how constrained most traditional media is."

Fostering Media Connections is a 501c(3) non-profit that harnesses the power of journalism to advance child welfare reform by covering emerging solutions to the system's challenges. The Chronicle of Social Change is a national online news site published by Fostering Media Connections that produces daily news about child welfare, juvenile justice and children's mental health issues.

The Ralph M. Parson Foundation, based in Los Angeles, "strives to support and facilitate the work of the region's best nonprofit organizations, recognizing that many of those in need today will go on to shape the future of Southern California, to define it, redefine it, and help it set and achieve new goals," according to its website.
