Dr. Alan Dilsaver Uses Waterlase for Greater Accuracy and Patient Comfort

As a provider of maxillofacial surgery who has been practicing for more than thirty years, Dr. Alan Dilsaver of Lehigh Valley Smiles combines practical experience with continued education to ensure he provides patients with the best possible treatments. While performing surgery, Dr. Dilsaver uses the Waterlase, a water-guided laser, in place of a drill or needle. The Waterlase eliminates a great deal of pain associated with older surgical tools and allows superior accuracy and shorter recuperation.

Waterlase has been commercially available since 1998, and the number of procedures it is approved for has only grown since then. It bathes the targeted area with a gentle stream of water in order to excite the water molecules native to the tissue and make them more receptive to the cutting laser. Because the pain from drills is mainly caused by heat, vibration, and pressure, the laser is far less uncomfortable. For less painful procedures, dentists don't need to administer nearly as much anesthesia. Besides making surgery less frightening and demanding for a patient, this also substantially reduces one of the largest risk elements in any surgery and allows dentists to do more in a single session. Many patients also derive greater comfort simply from not having to hear the noise of drilling.

Although enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, the Waterlase allows dentists to cut through decay with minimal interference to the surrounding tooth. This prevents teeth from cracking and reduces the amount of good tissue that gets lost with the bad. The Waterlase can also be used for the removal of soft tissue, such as gums, and causes less bleeding than non-lasic cutting tools. Besides removing areas affected by periodontal disease, the Waterlase can also be used to expose unerupted teeth, cut flaps in preparation for other surgeries, and for reductions of the uvula as a treatment for sleep apnea.

Dr. Dilsaver's practice also performs a number of facial bone surgeries, and Waterlase is approved for procedures such as bone grafting and orthognathic surgery, as well. As new studies are done comparing the Waterlase to other tools, Dr. Dilsaver's continuing education allows him to change his procedures to treat patients in accordance with the latest medical knowledge. Patient comfort and safety are at the core his philosophy, and the Waterlase is just one of many high-tech tools found in his office.
