Police Pound Pavement for the Cure

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Nov. 15, 2016 - PRLog -- City Police Chief Juan Montaño had a great idea.

"Since city personnel are walking around during public events anyway, Montaño said, "why not use that walking as a way to raise money for worthy causes?"

The Mayor and City Manager embraced Montaño's idea, and as a result the LVPD recently raised $1,225 for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America by creating a "walk-a-thon" around the distance that police covered on foot at the Fourth of July Fiestas and the Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally.

Montaño said that Community Development Director Annette Velarde and Teresa Duran of the LVPD worked hard to organize the walk-a-thons. A number of local businesses, including BTU and AltaVista Regional Hospital, as well as individuals, pledged for the event.

The Multiple Sclerosis Association was chosen because several employees within the City of Las Vegas have been diagnosed with the disease.

Montaño said he looks forward to more departments being involved and more money being raised next year to help fund research and assistance with diseases such as lupus and breast cancer.
