Agricultural Robots Offer Solution to Expected Global Food and Industry Labor Shortage

Agribotics is headed to farms as a 2 billion increase in the world's population and shortage in agricultural labor threatens a food shortage

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Nov. 14, 2016 - PRLog -- The world is growing, and thus creating three major challenges: a decrease in resource availability, a higher demand for nutritionally-beneficial food and a reduced agricultural workforce. To feed the world's projected 9 billion people, agricultural production must increase 25%. The question: How?

In a report titled Robot Harvest: Agribotics for Farm, Field and Orchard, Robotics Business Review (RBR), emphasizes the increased adoption of agricultural robotics as a means to maximize efficiency and productivity and alleviate the impending food burden.

"Agricultural robotics (often referred to as agribotics), is a necessity if farmers are to meet the surging global demand for fresh food over the coming decades. Driven primarily by labor shortages (and costs), adoption of agricultural robots is further encouraged by the precision and productivity improvements they deliver," states the Robotics Business Review report.

The global agricultural robot market is projected to reach $16.3 billion by 2020. Though agricultural technology funding grew to $1.8 billion in the first half of 2016, pricing currently remains a barrier to rapid adoption of automated solutions.

RBR's report identifies agricultural robots currently available in the market, including cost-saving milking robots and autonomous systems like the 300,000 tractors in the U.S. already equipped with auto-steer. Also introduced are newer systems such as drones, fruit-picking robots and vertical farms which will boost effectiveness but are still in the early stages of development and carry a hefty price tag.

More detailed analysis including new developments in precision farming, the investment landscape for agricultural robotics, technology drivers, leading industry players, potential challenges and barriers can also be found in this comprehensive report.
