Tabla is part of the membranophone in musical instruments of India and it has not only been a significant contributor to Indian music mainly Hindustani but also throughout the subcontinent of India like Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. According to the words of the legendary Rebecca Steward, tabla

History of Tabla

The tabla is confirmed to have been developed during the Vedic age. But, it has been researched thoroughly but nothing has been confirmed yet, but it's said that the tabla was invented by the drummer Amir Khusru in the middle of the 18th century like 1738. It has also been rumored that the melodic percussion instrument was formed when a single drum was divided into two forms where the smaller portion became the Bayan which produced the low pitch. While the larger part formed the Dayan which is the dominant part of a tabla and is cylindrical in shape.

Bayan & Dayan

Dayan-
the Dayan of Tabla is the larger part of it which creates the high pitch sound. It is constructed of various kinds of wood. Usually, it is a custom in the city of Kolkata to create a hollow inside the body of the Dayan. The size of a Dayan various roughly by 5-6 inches. And the tuning of the Dayan depends on the diameter of the skin of the membrane. Dayan creates a high pitch sound; hence it is usually played with the Bayan corresponding to a low high melody.

Bayan- The Tabla's second half of its pair includes the Bayan. The Bayan is of smaller size and corresponds to the low pitch sound of the Tabla. In a drum duo, it takes up the part of the bass. Its body is made up of metal like copper with chrome plating. The index and the middle fingers are used to play the Bayan simultaneously in turns while the ball of the thumb rests on the edge of it. That is how the pitch is created by the slight pressure of the skin.

Wood Types Used

As mentioned, the Dayan even though being created of wood does not have an objective value to it. But the wood still matters. That is because the factors like the skin, the membrane and the Gab quality contribute to the sound of the Dayan. It is important that the quality of the wood of Tabla is high because you will see it splitting otherwise when you use it over a period of time. Here is some of the most commonly used wood used for the creation of Tabla,

·  Neem- the Mango wood or the Neem must always come from a thick trunk or else you will see it splitting in the course of time. It is of a good quality when it is dried.

·  Mahogany- Mahogany is another famous material. It is darker in texture and robust.

·  Shisham- Shisham is one of the most popular wooden materials that are sought for. It has a good density and comes from a thick trunk which gives a high quality of wood.
