DUBLIN, Ga. - Nov. 14, 2016 - PRLog -- Since the abortion pill was first approved by the FDA sixteen years ago in 2000, several healthcare providers assumed that Mifeprex pill will improves common women's access to pregnancy termination. The idea was that doctors' (which included gynecologists, obstetrician and other practitioners who didn't provide surgical procedures) would eventually prescribe medical abortion with Mifeprex, a brand of generic medication Mifepristone.

Access to abortive services in the past

When the FDA approved the pill, 87% of counties had no clinics where pregnancy cancellations could be carried out. According to a healthcare research these counties weren't the only ones in scarcely populated regions, but nearly one third of U.S metropolitan area had no abortion providing clinics in the early 2000 decade. Therefore, there was hope that pregnancy cancellation pills would move the abortive procedure to a private practice.

Unfortunately, that hope didn't become a reality.

After sixteen years of being in the market, a total of 2.75 million American women have used Mifeprex, also referred as Generic RU 486. Due to regulatory requirements and stigma surrounding the topic, only few doctors (who don't provide surgical procedures) provide pregnancy cancellation drugs.

Now medically induced pregnancy cancellation make up half of the abortions done in America, even if the overall amount of abortion has decreased in the U.S.

Barriers for prescription

A professor of gynecologist comments that one of the main reasons for the slow growth in usage of Mifepristone is because not many physicians don't want to take it on, while other's can't just write a prescription.

Another barrier is due to FDA requirement for a REMS Risk Evaluation and Mitigation strategy for Mifeprex. This strategy is for safety purposes to manage a previously known or a potential serious risk that is associated with the drug and for enabling patients to have continued safe access.

Yet researchers state that more health issues and deaths have been caused by other medications like Viagra (which doesn't have REMS).

They don't advocate for Viagra to have a REMS, but question the need for one for Mifeprex.

A reputed health care researcher states that REMS for Mifeprex is no longer required based on his study of analyzing Medicaid data for emergency visits. He analyzed more than 11,000 medical terminations, among which less than one-third had complications after the procedure, a number far less than problems arising from anti-impotence drugs.

The new FDA amendment

The FDA amendment updated the REMS and other label details regarding Mifeprex according to latest research, but it didn't completely eliminate REMS.

According to the new label, women who decided to buy abortion pills could use them up to 70 days of gestation (from 49 days), while reducing three pills Mifeprex dosage requirement to one. Increasing the viable termination period also increased the number of patients from 35% to 75%.

The requirement also allows women to take Misoprostol at their home instead of making a second trip to the clinic. The new follow up requirements also means that women can have their after check up at a health care provider of their choice, instead of waiting at the clinic.

Aside from REMS, one of the major barriers that stop doctors from prescribing abortion pills is due to the stigma of pregnancy cancellation in society.
