Facebook Opens Marketplace to Take On Ebay and Craigslist

NOIDA, India - Nov. 11, 2016 - PRLog -- Facebook has taken one more step towards connecting people. But this time this extends beyond your friend circle, colleagues, and acquaintances. Facebook has launched a new and prominent feature called "Marketplace", which allows people to discover, sell, and buy products with other people in their area. The mobile version of this new feature will be initially launched in US, UK, Australia and New Zealand in the coming days and will be available to users over the age of 18.

Facebook said the inspiration for Marketplace came from observing that a significant number of people were using Facebook to buy and sell products, especially within "Groups." Facebook has clearly stated that it is not performing the role of a retailer or auctioneers and it won't facilitate the payment or delivery of items in Marketplace. Users will have to work out the details of the transaction and delivery on their own. For now Facebook won't charge anything to post the listings, which gives it a massive advantage over e-bay, and other buy-sell apps.

The Marketplace icon will be in the form of a shopping bag placed next to messenger and notification icon in the bottom of the app. Facebook Marketplace allows you to browse through a list of products based on the pages you liked, products you browse, making it simpler for shoppers to narrow down choices. To sell stuff the users will just have to add the picture, description, price, category and location of the product. Marketplace also allows you to track of your current and past transactions, user will just have to visit the Your Items section. There, you can also view your saved items, products you've posted for sale, and all your messages with people. Marketplace will also let you discover products in your area and you can filter them using location, price and category.

A great advantage of Marketplace over Craigslist, is that it allows you to have more information about the seller or buyer based on their profile, which can help in establishing more trust before the purchase is even made. Another great advantage of Marketplace, which is completely missing in Craigslist is that it allows you to save a product and come back to it later.
