JALANDHAR, India - Nov. 7, 2016 - PRLog -- School of Law at Lovely Professional University conducted 'National Moot Court Competition' (NMCC) at the campus. The theme was 'Amendment Bill of 2016 to the 'Child Labour Law'. Near 100 student-participants of 38 prestigious Law Universities and Colleges from across India argued their cases. Following the dictum of famous Greek philosopher, scientist and critic Aristotle that that "Law is reason, and free from passion", competing students proved their ability to be a true advocate in the future. The conduction was indeed a great learning and training experience for law students of the country. Competition was open for students pursuing 3/5 years' LLB Degree Course from any recognized Law College or University in India. The final round of the competition was judged by Hon'ble Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge (Retd.) SN Agrawal, who is currently Head of the Backward Class Commission of Haryana.

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal informed: "The main motive of the competition was to make students know how a Bill or its amendment is framed by the legislators and how it is declared void or valid. As this Bill was much discussed amid different sections of the society, so it was specially chosen to create awareness among the students about the impact of the amendment."

Parliament of India has passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016, which was first passed in Rajya Sabha and later in Lok Sabha during Monsoon session of the Parliament. It seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 to widen the scope of the law against child labour and stricter punishments for violations. The Bill calls for complete ban on employment of children below 14 in all occupations and enterprises, except those run by his or her family. It defines children between 14 to 18 years as adolescents and also bars their employment in any hazardous occupations. It makes child labour a cognizable offence attracting a jail term of up to two years and penalty up to fifty Rs 50,000. The Bill also has a provision of creating Rehabilitation Fund for the rehabilitation of children.
