Former Pitt RB files concussion lawsuit against university, NCAA, two conferences

NEW YORK - Nov. 1, 2016 - PRLog -- A class action lawsuit was filed by a former University of Pittsburgh football player against the university, the NCAA and two athletic conferences in federal court this week, claiming he suffered several undiagnosed concussions and that the university prioritized a "'win-first' mentality" over the health of its players.

Former running back Brandon Mason's class-action lawsuit, seeks damages on behalf of all University of Pittsburgh football players since 1990.

According to the suit, Mason, 30, who played for the school 2004 to 2006, received "head-to-head contact" in nearly every full practice and game.

"Mason suffered undiagnosed concussions and sub-concussive hits numerous times in practice, resulting in 'dizziness, [seeing] stars and memory loss throughout. Dizziness was very common but memory loss completely scared me, which I am still bothered by today,'" the suit claims.  The NCAA penalizes and sometimes ejects players for helmet-to-helmet collisions.

After the 2006 season, Mason transferred to Stony Brook University in New York partly because of the "treatment of his neurological injuries."

Attorney Brittany Weiner, a partner of the law firm Imbesi Law P.C., represents the plaintiffs, along with the law firm Napoli Shkolnik PLLC.
