FORT MYERS, Fla. - Oct. 27, 2016 - PRLog -- A rare eye condition in HIV positive patients is reported by Dr. Katrina A. Mears of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida in an article she co-authored in the October issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) - Ophthalmology.

A man in his early 30s presented to an emergency department with facial lesions around his eye.  A human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test revealed that the patient was HIV positive.

"This case is significant not just because it is rare in HIV- positive patients, but because the HIV medications are so successful that we would rarely see a patient with advanced ocular lesions at all," Dr. Mears said.  "This demonstrates the importance of recognizing unusual ocular manifestations of life-threatening infections such as AIDS."

Prior to joining Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida as a specialist in diseases of the retina and vitreous, Dr. Mears was a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at Louisiana State University in New Orleans.  She also has extensive clinical experience as well as research in clinical trials.

Articles by Dr. Mears have been published in JAMA Ophthalmology, New England Journal of Medicine and various other scientific and professional publications.

She earned her medical degree from the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland Galway.

Dr. Mears earned a Master of Science degree in biomedical sciences from the University of Montreal in Canada.  She completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.
