Mears' Research Published in JAMABy: Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida A man in his early 30s presented to an emergency department with facial lesions around his eye. A human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test revealed that the patient was HIV positive. "This case is significant not just because it is rare in HIV- positive patients, but because the HIV medications are so successful that we would rarely see a patient with advanced ocular lesions at all," Dr. Mears said. "This demonstrates the importance of recognizing unusual ocular manifestations of life-threatening infections such as AIDS." Prior to joining Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida as a specialist in diseases of the retina and vitreous, Dr. Mears was a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. She earned her medical degree from the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland Galway. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. She also was honored with a Fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Ia. She is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom.
