By: Prime Stage Theatre http://whirlmagazine.com/ In 1996, Wayne Brinda, a graduate of Duquesne University and longtime Pittsburgh educator and theater director, co-founded Prime Stage with his wife, Connie Brinda. Next month, the organization celebrates 20 successful years as a professional theater organization and educational institution serving the Pittsburgh area with the opening of its production of "To Kill a Mockingbird," In addition to presenting productions based on important works of both classic and contemporary literature, Prime Stage's longstanding commitment to education has resulted in improved literacy among the organization's audiences and program participants. In the Whirl interview, Brinda discusses the organization's mission to combine and present theater and literary education in a unique way, one that has proven both popular and beneficial and had attracted repeat audiences for two decades. This commitment extends to Prime Stage's participation this fall in the Big Read, a National Endowment for the Arts initiative that brings programs to communities in the Pittsburgh area. In addition to his work with Prime Stage, Brinda is highly regarded among Pittsburgh audiences for his previous work directing the children's program at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and for the many years he spent directing plays at the former Red Barn Theater in Hampton Township.
