By: AutoVolo.co.uk Ford's Kuga SUV has been updated for the 2017 model year, with an emphasis on smartphone connectivity technology. This is enabled by the addition of Ford's latest Sync 3 infotainment system, which now caters for conversational voice commands, as well as more traditional push-button controls. With the new system, saying more natural phrases such as "I need a coffee", will be enough to instruct the navigation to find the nearest café. The new eight-inch touchscreen, however, is likely to be a more common method of controlling the Sync 3 system. Featuring larger buttons than the old Sync 2 unit and a more intuitive, smartphone-style pinch-and-swipe function, it has been designed to be more user friendly than before. It also has Apple Car Play and Android Auto built in, allowing users to access more of their phone's capability on the move, while vehicle software updates can be carried out via a WiFi connection. Ford of Europe's vice-president of Product Development, Joe Bakaj, said: "The new Kuga offers cutting-edge new features and technologies that will help drivers stay connected, comfortable, safe and stylish on the road. "The sophisticated redesign has given Kuga a fresh and modern feel, while Sync 3 enables drivers to communicate with their vehicle and connected devices in seamless ways that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago." As well as the Sync 3 system, Ford has also given the updated Kuga its latest Perpendicular Parking technology, which steers the car into parking spaces while the driver controls speed and gears. Under the bonnet, the new Kuga is offered with Ford's latest-generation petrol and diesel engines, the most powerful of which is the 180bhp 1.5-litre petrol. The most economical, however, is the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel unit, which returns 60.1mpg on the combined cycle and 122g/km CO2 emissions when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.
