Symposium on Women and Genocide to Take Place in Washington DC

On Friday October 21 and Saturday October 22, Darfur Women Action Group and partners will present the 5th Annual National Symposium on Women & Genocide in the 21st Century: The Case of Darfur.
 
WASHINGTON - Oct. 20, 2016 - PRLog -- For the last four years (DWAG) has teamed up with its partners to present to you it's unique and the only annual symposium focuses on genocide in the 21st century and it impact on women. The event will feature outstanding speakers, among them Canadian Senator Mobina Jaffer, chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights, who works to ensure that there will be policy in place to protect women and girls from gender-based violence in situations of armed conflict. Also Mona Ali Khalil, a public international lawyer who has 20 years of experience with projects involving peacekeeping, sanctions, disarmament and counter-terrorism in the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency. And Carl Wilkens, who was the only  American humanitarian worker who remained in Rwanda in the walk of the genocide attack and saved hundreds of lives during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. In addition to a group of great academics experts and advocates who have been effectively contributing to solution of various problem for years

The symposium will not only give survivors an opportunity to share stories of victimization but also of leadership, courage and resilience in that they have demonstrated in  face of genocide and mass atrocities. Our speakers and participants will also discuss effective strategies for women empowerment, accountability for genocide and crimes committed against women, effective approaches and partnerships for genocide prevention and, most importantly, the root cause of the crises in Sudan and the necessary measures to resolve these issues.

The symposium was first founded in 2012 by Niemat Ahmadi, president of Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG) and a veteran human rights advocate who suffered several attempts on her life for being vocal about mass atrocities in Darfur. Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG) is a women-led anti-atrocities nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status, founded in 2009 by a Darfuri genocide survivor. DWAG works to empower victims and survivors of the Darfur genocide, and to prevent future atrocities while promoting global peace. The symposium is being hosted in partnership with STAND, Genocide Watch, the Genocide Prevention Program at The School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Women Thrive Alliance and The Global Women's Institute.
