DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® - New tool supports producers in achieving Detox targets

TSIM SHA TSUI, Hong Kong - Oct. 19, 2016 - PRLog -- Zurich (hm) How can textile companies successfully communicate whether, and to what extent, they meet the targets outlined by the Detox campaign which excludes process chemicals that are harmful to the environment? Launching immediately, the OEKO-TEX® Association will offer a new tool as a practical answer to these pressing questions from brand and retail companies who want to meet Greenpeace requirements. DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® enables manufacturers along the textile chain to assess the status of their chemical management systems and the quality of their waste water and sludge, all documented using credible, independent verification. DETOX TO ZERO by OEKOTEX® allows companies to better identify harmful substances in textile production, to handle them in a responsible way and eliminate them incrementally by 2020, contributing to the fulfilment of Detox demands.

DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® comprises three basic modules: an MRSL screening of all chemicals used, an analysis and assessment of the established chemical management system as well as a review of all waste water and sludge with regard to the eleven groups of harmful chemicals condemned by Greenpeace. The results are summarised in an annual status report that lists the extent to which the company is already compliant with the Detox targets and includes specific improvement suggestions for further implementation. With this status report, companies are also able to transparently communicate the stages achieved on the path toward complete elimination of Detox substances. Stakeholder groups, such as NGOs or consumers, can use the website www.oeko-tex.com/detoxtozero to check company information at any time using the report number.

The OEKO-TEX® brand portfolio, however, extends well beyond the reaches of the Detox requirements. Managing systems and processes throughout the textile supply chain, OEKO-TEX® services include a certification for nonhazardous and environmentally friendly textile chemicals, a product label for textiles that have been tested for harmful chemicals and produced in a sustainable manner, and a database for central supply chain management. As the OEKO-TEX® Association plans to celebrate 25 years of sustainable change in 2017, look for the introduction of new services for the textile industry as well as a new, refreshed look for the brand. Since 1992, more than 10,000 OEKOTEX® partner companies from industry and retail have relied upon the OEKO-TEX "Confidence in Textiles" promise and, with the OEKO-TEX portfolio of certifications and labels, contributed to enhanced consumer protection.

With the new DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® tool, brand and retail companies who have committed to the Detox campaign can specifically monitor the chemical management processes of their suppliers and work to ensure compliance with the Greenpeace targets.
