Samsung American Legion Scholarship $20,000 Winner in Colorado

DENVER - Oct. 18, 2016 - PRLog -- A Highlands Ranch Rock Canyon High School student, senior Sydney Marchando, has been selected to receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program.

Sydney was sponsored by Unit 1260 Highlands Ranch to attend the 2016 Girls State Program. Sydney was a citizen of the city of Sunflower and her counselor was Marissa Sotomayor.

The ALA Girls State is a premiere Americanism program that girls who have finished their junior year in high are able to attend. It is a one week course of intensive study in civics. They create their own city, county and state governments. They can campaign for political office and develop laws that are debated before the house and senate, just like on Capitol Hill.

It was during attendance to at the Colorado Auxiliary Girls State in June 2016 that Sydney applied for the Samsung Scholarship.

In 1966 the program was established when the worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to show its appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War. The American Legion administers the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program, which is funded by the interest and other income from the endowment.

Every year, $300,000 in Samsung American Legion Scholarships are awarded to nearly 100 American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State participants.

Scholarship applications are restricted to high school juniors who attend the current session of either The American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant - i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. - or a legally adopted child of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership.

Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service and financial need. Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration.

Samsung scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room and board.
