SCPA Presents: The Soldier's Project: Preparing Clinicians To Serve The Needs Of Veterans

Suffolk County Psychological Association presents another Friday night workshop for mental health professionals. This workshop is on helping clinicians understand the needs of our veterans.

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - Oct. 18, 2016 - PRLog -- Suffolk County has the largest population of veterans in New York State. Many of these veterans use the services of the Veterans Administration (VA) but given their numbers, their specific needs and the wait time, additional options are needed. One of these options is The Soldiers Project (TSP) which provides pro bono mental health services for any veteran who has served during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, regardless of discharge status. TSP also provides mental health services for their loved ones including parents, spouses, partners, and children.

Consistent with the support and education that The Soldiers Project offers its volunteer therapists, this program offers clinicians an opportunity to learn about the mental health needs of Post 9/11 veterans and those factors that bear on providing them with clinical services. As such, the program will report on a recent study of military women, which reveals "in their words" the pride and pain they carry, what they have experienced and what they see as barriers and pathways to mental health care.

In addition, presenters will draw upon their clinical experience with veterans to explore issues faced by this population, including isolation, alienation, anger, anxiety, depression, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse, and suicidality. From a strengths perspective, the program will briefly discuss military culture and how that translates into resilience within the veteran population that can be utilized to form a therapeutic alliance. With these factors in mind, treatment dynamics will be discussed.
