Healthy indoor living this autumn

Autumn is approaching and the leaves are changing colour creating beautiful scenery outdoors….but it can also have some unpleasant surprises for our indoor health.

DUBLIN - Oct. 6, 2016 - PRLog -- When the weather gets cooler outside we tend to keep our windows closed more. Our houses are becoming so airtight - without adequate ventilation your indoor air can be affecting your family's health.

We spend 90% of our time indoors. Poor indoor air can trigger coughing, sore throats, itchy eyes, headaches, allergies, even an asthma attack. It can exacerbate existing symptoms or even cause symptoms to develop.

Allergy and asthma triggers inside the home can include dust mites, mold, pet dander, VOC's (volatile organic compounds found in household cleaning products, candles, wood burning stoves) and even flooring and paint.

Take dust mites - in the autumn, dust mites start dying off and the effect they have on air quality increases. The result of breathing in dust mite particles can be a runny nose or other respiratory symptoms.

The much loved wood burning stove and open fire looks great and brings warmth to your living area, however the burning wood releases fine particles into the air. These particles can be bad for your health and make asthma symptoms worse. In the UK and Ireland nearly 6 million people suffer from asthma. The stoves also produce conditions that can raise humidity levels (above 50% is unhealthy) and promote mold growth. Molds produce allergens and irritants. Symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose and skin rashes.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to check whether or not your indoor air is healthy or not.

cairTM is a smart indoor air quality sensor that continuously monitors the air in your home. cairTM will alert you when levels of airborne contaminants and irritants (like dust mites, mold and toxins) are elevated. It is unique compared to other air quality sensors in that cairTM learns your asthma and allergy triggers with its 'log event' function. cairTM collaborates with The Asthma Society of Ireland to make personalised recommendations.

Kevin Kelly, Chief Advocacy Officer, Asthma Ireland, says, "Tracking indoor air quality will help people identify patterns and triggers.'"

So before you switch on your HEPA filer or humidifier, invest in an indoor air quality sensor like cairTM and pinpoint your personal triggers. With cairTM you get help working out your individual triggers and take control over the air you breathe at home.
