Information Security Forum Webcast to Examine Privacy vs. Security

Managing Director Steve Durbin Will Discuss the Importance of Organizations Becoming Ready for General Data Protection Regulation
By: Information Security Forum

NEW YORK - Oct. 4, 2016 - PRLog -- According to the Information Security Forum (ISF), most governments have created, or are in the process of creating, regulations that impose conditions on the protection and use of Personally Identifiable Information (PII), with penalties for organizations who fail to sufficiently protect it. As a result, organizations need to treat privacy as both a compliance and business risk issue, in order to reduce regulatory sanctions and commercial impacts such as reputational damage and consequential loss of customers due to privacy breaches.

In Europe, the European Union's (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect by May 2018. Any organization that operates within the EU, does business with organizations in the EU, or stores data in the EU, will need to comply. The GDPR strengthens the rights of citizens with respect to access, portability and protection of personal data. In particular, it increases responsibility and accountability for those processing personal data, and places an emphasis on key areas such as risk assessments and the role of data protection officers. Compliance with the GDPR will require a focus on how privacy and data protection are addressed in handling information, but also on related areas such as awareness, incident management and achieving 'data protection by design'.

During this webcast, Steve Durbin Managing Director of the ISF, will discuss why it is important for security and data privacy teams to work together to run risk assessments on their most critical information assets and to develop checklists, policies and procedures that can be implemented internally and with third party suppliers. Only by taking this approach will organizations be able to remain agile, maintain customer confidence and demonstrate that they are 'GDPR ready.'
