Senator Kevin de León to be Honored at October 6th Latino Leaders Luncheon Series

WASHINGTON - Sept. 30, 2016 - PRLog -- Senator Kevin de León, President pro Tempore of the California State Senate, will receive the Eagle Leadership Award at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series on Thursday, October 6th from 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at The California Club (538 South Flower Street, Los Angeles, CA). Special guests scheduled to attend include Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Janet Murguía, and former California State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez.

The Latino Leaders Luncheon Series is hosted by the Latino Leaders Network (LLN), a non-profit based in Washington, DC, and Hon. Mickey Ibarra, Chairman and author of MICKEYISMS: 30 Tips for Success, to provide a platform for prominent Latino leaders to share their personal stories of obstacles overcome to achieve success. Launched in 2004 in Boston, the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series will convene its 49th event of the series honoring national Latino leaders.

De León served four years in the Assembly before his election to the Senate in 2010. He is the first person in California history to serve as the Chair of the Appropriations committees in both the Assembly and Senate. In 2014 he became the first Latino elected leader of the Senate in over a century.

Throughout his legislative career, De León has focused much of his efforts on bills affecting the environment, the working poor, immigration and public safety.

Last year, De León championed sweeping new standards that double energy efficiency in buildings statewide and set California on a path to generate half of its electricity from renewable sources, all by 2030. In 2013, De León brokered a compromise with Governor Jerry Brown to ensure signage of a law which allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, gain access to insurance, and step out of the shadow economy. He also negotiated with Governor Brown and the state's unions to secure a $15 minimum wage in California.

De León led the charge for the most stringent gun control policies in a generation, leading efforts to approve 11 measures, including his groundbreaking bill, SB 1235, which requires background checks for anyone who buys or sells ammunition. Governor Brown signed the bulk of the measures into law in early July 2016.

"We are proud to recognize Senator Kevin de León's leadership and service to our community," said Mickey Ibarra, Founder and Chairman of the Latino Leaders Network. "Our event provides a platform to share his personal story of obstacles overcome, which inspires us all."

Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO, will speak at the event as LLN's community partner.

The event is sponsored by Community Loans of America, The Coca-Cola Company, Univision, Anheuser-Busch, and Southwest Airlines – the "Official Airline of the Latino Leaders Network."
