Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Really Give Clearer Skin?

Laser treatments have come a long way since their development and have been a revolutionary device in the beauty industry. Laser skin treatments now offer better precision and faster recovery than many other skin resurfacing methods and we spoke to Dr Vik, a skin specialist at Dermaskin Chester, to find out more.

"A laser device can emit a high energy beam of light of any spectrum. They've been used since the 1960s as a surgical cutting tool, but the tool we use now at Dermaskin are known technically as 'selective photothermolysis' lasers." He explains "We mainly use skin laser treatment to reduce fine lines, to treat scarring and pitted skin and to improve complexion by reducing age spots and blemishes, often caused by sun damage."

There are two types of skin resurfacing laser treatment – ablative laser (removes the outermost layers of skin, healing over a period of time) and non-ablative laser (causes damage within the dermal part of the skin leaving the outer layers intact and reducing recovery time, however a more subtle effect). Both will improve the appearance of skin over a course of at least 3 treatments following a thorough consultation with a qualified doctor.
