It has the highest 5-year global prevalence of any cancer type, which is estimated to have increased by 21% since 2008 to 6.3 million women in 20121. It is the fifth highest cause of cancer-related death worldwide2 and the leading cause of cancer-related death in women, accounting for 15% of the total3. The global economic cost of breast cancer was estimated at $88 billion in 2008, with only lung cancer and colorectal cancer having a greater economic burden4.
