Follow on Google News | 200th Anniversary of the Stirling engineIt is the bicentenary invention of the Stirling engine. The Engine was invented and patented on this date 200 years ago by the Scottish clergyman Reverend Dr Robert Stirling.
Stirling engines convert heat into useful mechanical motion using the expansion and contraction of air or gases within the engine and can run on virtually any heat source. In the second half of the 1800s the Stirling engine was common place on large farms and large country houses pumping water from a steam or lake to the main farm or house. Not requiring water to begin, it sold itself into this application. Furthermore anyone that could light a fire could operate them; the same could not be said for steam engines. As the century 1900 past the Stirling engine popularity waned due to electrification, public water supplies and increasing use of combustion engines. Between the late 1930s and 1950s Philips did massive amounts of research to develop small portable Stirling engine generators. Most modern Stirling engines owe some of the ancestry to the work at Philips. Nowadays Stirling engines are enjoying quiet revival, providing power on some types of submarines, remote CHP power generators, CHP boilers, medical fridges, cooling for super conductors on mobile phone masts, large scale solar power farms, small models and toys. Dean Kamen the inventor of the Segway has even been run trials with them as a range extender in electric cars. Stirling engines have proved highly successful in some particular niche markets such as cryogenics; where the Stirling engine is powered by an electric motor with the engine becoming a heat-pump. They also seem to have an unofficial record for the words longest running serviced engine at around 30 years no stop running. 200 year on the future for Stirling engines is brighter than ever.
