About the Author: Shane Simmons is a lifelong resident of the Appalachian Mountains. He is a founder of the Appalachian Project (TAP), a multimedia group created to preserve the heritage of the central and southern Appalachians. In addition to East Tennessee folklore, his areas of interest include the history of the coal mining industry in central Appalachia, the Civil War in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Appalachian cultural history.
